TREATMENTS
Pharmacological
Antidepressants
SSRI's (citalopram, sertraline, fluoxetine)
Adverse Effects: Dizziness, Lightheadedness, Drowsiness, Dry Mouth, Insomnia.

Nursing Implications: Monitor patient for serotonin syndrome (agitation, coma, diarrhea, tachycardia, headache. Should not be given to patients with bradycardia, long QT syndrome. Monitor liver enzymes.
Benzodiazepines
Diazepam & Alprazolam
Adverse Effects: Drowsiness, Cognitive issues, Impaired Coordination, Steven Johnson Syndrome, Angioedema, Hepatic Failure.
Action: Works by increasing effects of GABA (an inhibitory neurotransmitter), this helps to control emotional behavior.

Beta Blockers
Atenolol & Propranolol
Adverse Effects: Arrhythmias, Bradycardia, Laryngospasm, Renal Failure, Bronchospasm.
Action: Works by decreasing cardiac excitability, cardiac output, and cardiac oxygen demand.
Nursing Implications: Use cautiously in patients with heart failure and diabetic patients. Monitor patient for heart failure and hyperthyroidism.
Non-Pharmacological
Exposure Therapy
In vivo exposure: Directly facing a feared object, situation or activity in real life
Imaginal exposure: Vividly imagining the feared object, situation or activity.
Interoceptive exposure: Deliberately bringing on physical sensations that are harmless, yet feared.

PREDISPOSING FACTORS
Tends to run in families, having a 1st degree relative with a specific phobia puts one at risk for having the same specific phobia.

Encourage the patient to share the seemingly unnatural fears and feelings with others, especially their therapist.
