PHYSIOLOGY L1-NUTRITION(pt.2)
Dietary Reference Intakes
Estimated Average Requirement
=estimated amount that one needs to eat to cover the requirements for 50% of the population(normal curve)
Recommended dietary
=average daily level of intakes sufficient to meet the nutrient requirements of 97%-98% of healthy people in a particular life stage and gender group(2 SD above EAR)
Adequate intake
=If sufficient scientific evidence is not available to calculate an EAR, (AI) is provided instead of an RDA.
Tolerable Upper Intake Level
= highest level of daily nutrient intake that is likely to pose no risk of adverse health effects for almost all apparently healthy individuals high intakes my have toxic efffects
reference values used to plan & assess nutrient intakes of healthy people
Dietary goals
% of total energy provided by Carbs, protein ,fats
Ensure that base quality types of fat & carbs are consumed=healthy diet , prevent Non-communicable diseseses
provide insights into the recommended macronutrient composition of diets
formulated as range
EAR
=needs evidence to calculate the RDA.If there is no evidence , RDA cannot be formulated
EAR & RDA differ for males & females(but not for all nutrients
AI
formulated based on composition(e.g breast milk)-AI needed to exceed or meet requirements=nutritional state
Dietary Guidelines
DRIs & dietary goals expressed in terms of food
SA FBDG
Used for the public to assess & guide eating
Linked with patterns(quantity, proportion) of different food & drinks & frequency they are consumed
Food guides
Used to educate individuals on healthy eating
NB:Adequecy can be achieved within 1-2 weeks(not necessarily in a day)
