When H+ ions build up in the blood, chemoreceptors are stimulated in the medulla (in brain stem) which will send signals to increase ventilation rate to help flush out carbon dioxide. Very low blood pH can lead to respiratory acidosis and the symptoms are headache, drowsiness, restlessness, tremor, confusion.
