Overview
Introduction
Raiganj a big village, is 3kms from Palampur, has a well developed system of roads which connects Palampur to Riaganj as well to Shahpur, the nearest town from Palampur.
This village has about 450 families, there are 80 upper caste families which own the majority of land, there houses are made up of bricks and plasters. The SC's comprise of 1/3rd of the population and there houses are made up of mud and straw.
Most of the houses have electric connections. Electricity powers all the tub wells in the field. The village has two primary schools and one high schools. There is primary health center by the government and one private dispensary,
Organization Of Production
The aim of production the goods and services that we want :-
Land :The first requirement is land, and other natural resources such as water, forests, minerals.
Labor :The second requirement is labor, that refers to the manpower as well as mental power that a man posses which is required for the production production.
The 3rd necessary requirement is physical capital. It is the variety of inputs required at stage of production. It is also of 2 types
Physical Capital : It is the tools, machines and buildings which are a important factor for production.
Working Capital : Raw materials and money in hand which are required are known as working capital.
Human Capital : This refers to the human skills and knowledge. Human as an entrepreneur is the greatest resource which makes the production possible and sells the final product in the market.
Farming in Palampur
Land is Fixed
75 per cent of the people who are working are dependent on farming for their livelihood. Land area under cultivation is practically fixed. Since 1960 in Palampur, there has been no expansion in land area under cultivation.
Is there a way one can grow more from the same land?
In Palampur, no land is fixed idle. In the rainy season (kharif) farmers grow jowar and bajra. These plants are used as cattle fodder, followed by the cultivation of potatoes between October and December. In the (Rabi) season fields are sown with wheat, and a part of the field is also dedicated to sugarcane harvesting and it is sold to the traders in Shahpur.
The main reason why the farmers are able to grow so much crops is due to the establishment of the tub wells by the government. To grow more than one crop on a single piece of land is known as multiple cropping.
Modern Farming Methods : Modern farming method is used for higher yield. A yield is a measure of the crop produced in a single season. The Green Revolution in late 1960, Indian farmers were introduced with HYV seeds.
Will the land sustain?
Green Revolution is associated with the loss of soil fertility and the depletion of water table.
How is land distributed between the farmers of Palampur?
In Palampur, about one third of the 450 families are landless that is 150 families, most if them are Dalits. 240 families cultivate small plots of land less than 2 hectare in size. There are 60 families of medium and large farmers who cultivate more than 2 hectare of land. A few of them are large farmers extending the land over 10 hectare of land.
Also there are a few farmers who have less than 1 hectare of land.
Who will provide the labor?
Small farmers along with their families cultivate their own field of land. Thus provide the labor for farming families. A farm labourer set by the government is Rs 300 per day

Most of the small farmers borrow a from large farmers or the village moneylenders or the traders wo supply various inputs for cultivation.
Sale of Surplus Farm Products.
Large farmers get a huge yield, they sell the surplus obtained by the yield and money earned by the farmers is either saved by them or they buy various machines and tools.

Only 25 percent of the people working in Palampur are engaged in activities other than agricultures.
