Supervisor Meeting - 2021-08-02
Kate and Derek present
Progress with Analysis
EB stuff at the Baths completed
Wrapping up odd bits and bobs from Cunliffe this week
Will bring back CBM fabric reference collection so that I can crack on with CBM at BU
Hoping to get CBM data crunched and ready for presentation to Stephen for meeting in October
Thesis structure
Floated two alternatives
One was Bath stuff -> cut down methods -> CBM analysis results -> overview chapters -> synthesis in discussion
Other was split it by materials, e.g. Bath intro stuff -> CBM methods -> CBM overview -> clay -> CBM results -> stone methods -> stone overview -> stone results (if any) -> synthesis of stone and CBM
Write these down and expand them and submit to supervisors ahead of another meeting so that they have more of an idea of what I mean
Look at more thesis examples to see other alternatives
Supervisors cannot tell me the correct solution, only what appears to flow the best
Making it coherent and easy to read and use as a reference is extremely important
Stephen retiring
Although may leave RB before PhD is complete, should still be on board at RB Foundation and thus advocating for any projects I apply for
Don't worry about any staffing changes there, as will not really affect me and is out of my control
Kate and Derek did say I am an expert in the Roman Baths now, so RB will still be keen to keep in contact with me once PhD done, regardless of who is there
Meetings with Stephen
Shorter virtual meeting with Stephen soon
In coming Mondays would be best for all supervisors to be present
If he is busy, can always go ahead with just Kate and Mark, however
Aim is to prep Stephen for fact that response of HE might come too late to include stone sampling within thesis
Go through alternatives and justify why these are not suitable
Longer meeting in person at the Roman Baths
First two weeks of October best for Kate and Derek
Particularly Wednesdays, although might change depending upon teaching timetables
Will use longer meeting to go through results of crunching of CBM results
This means structural implications and fabric results in relation to components sizes, forms, structures etc.
Also an opportunity to ask Stephen about his role in Foundation, and details of reorganisation. Will replacement be interim or permanent? What about Zosia and Susan?
How will this affect any application for funding for future projects?
Roman Baths Foundation Funding
Maurice's application may have not been approved because of a range of issues, not a factor that means my applications will automatically be unsuccessful too
Could be personalities, Maurice's approach, or that many members of the board are layman, which requires a fundamentally different approach to getting money
Derek mentioned he has a colleague on his Greek project who is successful at targeting non-arch societies for funding, and may be willing to give advice on how best to achieve this
Ex-situ stone sampling proposal
Coming along, just need photos at Baths and hoping to complete and submit by end of week
Board game idea
Supervisors seemed keen to play it one day
Take a picture for Derek!
