CHEMISTRY OF LIFE
PROTEINS: they are molecules made up of amino acids that are linked by a type of bond known as peptide bonds. The order and arrangement of amino acids depend on the genetic code of each person. All proteins are made up of:
-
The many disciplines within Chemistry of Life include (bio)organic and medicinal chemistry, analytical and macromolecular chemistry that relate to biological processes, bio- and cellular chemistry, structural and chemical biology, molecular biology, and biophysics.
ATOMS/MOLECULES Atoms are the basic units of matter and the defining structure of elements and moleules are the unions of atoms.
LIPIDS: are a very heterogeneous group of organic compounds, consisting mainly of carbon, hydrogen and oxygen, and sometimes sulfur, nitrogen and phosphorus. In food there are basically three types of lipids: Fats or oils
CARBOHYDRATES: they are sugar molecules. Along with protein and fat, carbohydrates are one of the three main nutrients found in food and drink.
WHAT ARE SOME IMPORTANTS TYPES OF MOLECULES IN CELLS? They are: Lipids, proteins, carbohydrates, nucleids acids.
COMMON ELEMENTAL BUILDING BLOCKS ARE: carbon, oxygen, hydrogen, nitrogen and phosphurus.
NUCLEIC ACIDS: are an important type of macromolecules present in all cells and viruses. The functions of nucleic acids have to do with the storage and expression of genetic information.
WHAT ARE PHOSPHOLIPIDS?
Phospholipids provide barriers in cellular membranes to protect the cell, and they make barriers for the organelles within those cells. Phospholipids work to provide pathways for various substances across membranes.
WHY IS WATER IMPORTANT? Water is needed for digestive juices, urine (pee), and poop. And you can bet that water is the main ingredient in perspiration, also called sweat. Besides being an important part of the fluids in your body, water is needed by each cell to work.
STRUCTURE OF PHOSPHOLIPIDS: it's structure is the head and the tail. The head attracts the water and the tail repels the water.

RNA: is the nucleic acid information molecule that transfers information from the genome into proteins by translation.
