I am concerned with discriminatory attitudes that take place between Syrian and Lebanese teenagers in Mansourieh and I want to do something about it.
Problems and Needs
-
The need I see:
-
-
Teens need to grasp the value of reconciliation and understand that everybody wins when we forgive and make peace.
Teens need training and coaching/encouragement to live a different way than their parents and societies.
-
See teens offer practical examples, model empathy, good listening, kind words, respectful non-aggressive problem solving, etc...
-
Teens explain WHY reconciliation is the goal and are able to express the consequences of exclusion and animosity.
-
There is a need for intervention in discriminatory instances.
Adults of today need to speak into instances of discriminatory injustice so teens can see/experience the kingdom way. We NEED to prove and demonstrate that there IS another way and it is infinitely better!!!
Project Design
Developing empathy
By sharing meals and narratives, teens will discover common ground.

What is my timeframe?
What resources do I have? How do I get what I want with what I have?
What do I still need?
What are the risks?
How do I know I am done?
Timeframe: 1 year total. Initially 2 months of weekly shared time, followed by a check-in assessment at 4 months, 2 more weekly meals at 6 months and another assessment at 1 year.
Resources: 2 willing Syrian teenage participants, 2 willing Lebanese teenage participants
2 facilitators for data collection, group facilitation, report writing and follow-up work.-3

How do I know I have succeeded? "Articulate the connections between the new behaviors and organizational success, making sure they continue until they become strong enough to replace old habits."
RISKS:
-
-
-
-
-
When we introduce Jesus...what will happen with the teens? Will they still want to participate or will they become wary? What about their families?
I am making a lot of assumptions: Like, that students mesh really well by the 5th week and are super excited to invite their families to learn about what they're doing.

Project logic: If a group of 4 Lebanese and 4 Syrian teens between 14-17 year old in Mansourieh participate in weekly shared meals and perspective-taking activities, then participants will develop empathy towards one another.
Problem statement: Lebanese and Syrian teens in Mansourieh are are prejudiced towards the other because of complex shared history of conflict and ongoing current events.
The objective: To develop empathy through perspective taking and discovery of common ground in Lebanese and Syrian teens in Mansourieh.
