- - - - A Christian Manifesto - Schaeffer attributes a major part of the decline in our culture to the gradual breakdown of the family. (17)
        This means the importance of Biblical families is missing, and as a result more ungodly families are rising up in it's place. We need an increase in Biblical families that create a demand for a desire of the greater populace to want to see the family defined in Biblical terms.
        
        Children have become a hindrance to many in our society. Look at Japan and states out west with declining child birth rates and owning more pets than humans. This gives the potential to set the stage for a reversal in culture as the demise of the family leaves society stressed over the negative results, and brings about an end to its own ideology.
        
        Look for articles on declining birth rate being unable to replace current population, and more pets than children.
  - - - In this fallen world, that philosophy stems from a self orientation and not a God-centered orientation. Apart from God's people subduing and ruling the culture by taking every thought captive and making disciples, the culture will be a vehicle to promote putting the self first through self-gratification and autonomy. (153)

        There are two elements to it:
        
        They are to rule it: They are to march through the world as kings and queens, taking possession of everything. They are to harness the animals, the heat and cold, the electricity, seismic energy, to serve their own purposes. That means development. Adam and Eve are not to leave the world untouched, as some radical environmentalist would prefer. Rather, they are to use the resources of God's creation, to bring out the potential of the heavens and the earth, to facilitate their rule under God. They are to turn the creation in to a culture, into a home for human society. (855)
        
        Filling and rule. First, filling: Adam and Eve are to have children, grandchildren, and so on. They are not to stay in Eden. Genesis 2:24 say s that a man will leave his father and mother and live with his wife, so there is to be a multiplication of homes, ultimately throughout the world. (855)

        In Semitic culture, statutes were seen as a depiction of a person's claim to authority and rule. When God placed Adam and Eve, who are image bearers, in the world, he gives them the responsibility of representative rule with the purpose of subduing, ruling, and having dominion over the earth through having children (procreation - be fruitful and multiply). These image bearers were to cover the earth. (23-24)

        Sin does not nullify the cultural mandate. This is evidenced by God's repeating of the mandate to Noah and his family after the flood, as well as Jesus restating it through the Great Commission. (862)
      - God designed the church to be the primary influence that shapes the culture it resides in. The church is has been entrusted with the message of the Good News of Jesus Christ which brings life out of death.
        
        However, this fact it often recognized, whereas the fact that the church is comprised of individuals and families that have been commanded as members of the church to share the Gospel and live lives for the glory of God, is more neglected when it comes to considering how culture should be shaped.
        
        The church impacts the culture in two ways; direct and indirect. Direct through the offering of the ordinary means of grace. Indirect in shaping families to be salt and light in their communities.
        
        There is overlap between the church and the families that belong to her in the way the culture is impacted, but the two are not to be confused. The church and her families have distinct roles, purposes, spheres of operation, and authority, (Kostenberger 256)
  - - - God works through Abraham's family to bless the world
        
        Abraham moves his family (wife, father, nephew, etc)
        
        All of Genesis after Abraham comes on the scene deals with the family through which God is going to bless the world through the seed of the woman.
        
        This family mission that starts after Eve, moves through the line of Seth and the children of God, to Abraham from whose family the whole world will be blessed is fulfilled in Christ. He then restates the cultural mandate for his people to carry out in an already but not yet kingdom. This is to be done by the family of God, which is the church, which is comprised of numerous biological family units.
        
        Calling on Abraham as their great father, the Israelites saw themselves as a large extended family. (85) Kostenberger
        
        In the NT you see the church still viewing themselves as a part of this family that is to be used by God to bless all the nations (affecting culture).

        Culture is an integrated system of beliefs (about God or reality or ultimate meaning), of values (about what is true, good, beautiful and normative), of customs (how to behave, relate to others, talk, pray, dress, work, play, trade, farm, eat, etc.), and of institutions which express these beliefs, values and customs (government, law courts, temples or churches, family, schools, hospitals, factories, shops, unions, clubs, etc.), which binds a society together and gives it a sense of identity, dignity, security, and continuity.

        In the cosmic conflict that is taking place between God and Satan, one should not be surprised to find the divine institutions of marriage and the family in the crosshairs. It's a mistake to view the family solely in light of the cultural crisis and not also in light of this cosmic conflict. (156)

This means that marriage is not only a matter of producing children, but also of educating them to be obedient to Jesus Christ....In marriage it is for the service of Jesus Christ that new men are created."       - One of the main reasons that the Bible speaks of women keeping busy tending to the home (Titus 2:4) is because of the vital importance of training up children so that they might be salt and light in the world. The Bible doesn't see women as having little to offer and thus sticking them at home with the kids. Rather, it's the other way around. The Bible sees women as so important that they are given the important task of nurturing up image bearers of God who are meant conquer the work of the line of Satan in this world. (Campbell 272)

    - - Christians find two Biblical principles that they must hold in tension when engaging with culture. First, they are to be separate from it as God calls us to be holy, consecrated, and sanctified unto him having nothing to do with the evil ways of this world. However, they are also to rule and subdue it for the glory of God by being a salt and light to their communities and the world as they go and make disciples of all nations baptizing people in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, teaching them all of God's Word. This is summed up by John 17:15-16 when Jesus commands us to be in the world but not of the world. (152-153)
