CHARACTERS:
MARCUS: Over the course his high school years, Marcus had a major life transformation as he gets himself out off the streets and he pursues justice in the form of doing what is right. Marcus' growth illustrates that what Erin Gruwell achieved is something extraordinary and is to be truly remembered.
“I'm lucky if I make it to 18, we in a war! We graduating every day we live because we ain't afraid to die, protecting our own.”
MIEP GIES: As a Holocaust survivor, Miep Gies shares her compelling and relatable stories with the students for the chance of widening their worldview and changing beliefs.
“You are the heroes. You are heroes every day.”
EVA: Eva at the start of the film did anything to get out of trouble. Mrs Gruwell changed this mentality and taught her justice. Eva when placed in the court of law, told the judge the truth even against her own boyfriend and got justice.
“In America, a girl can be crowned a princess for her beauty, and her grace. But an Aztec princess is chosen for her blood.”
ERIN GRUWELL: Erin put time and effort into making these student's lives worthwhile and to get them to realise what life is about. Miss G goes through the highs and lows at home and in the classroom but is full dedicated and determined to get a result. Erin tried all she could be doing case studies, going on field trips and even visiting a Holocaust Legend. Through all this effort came reward, most of her students graduated and went to college of university.
“Life would be a whole lot better if they were all dead. That's how a holocaust happens, and that's what you all think of each other.”

CONTEXT
LA RIOTS: LA was in a massive social divide at the time. Racial tensions were high and fighting was still at large. In Long Beach at the time of Erin Gruwell’s teaching, African-American, Asian and Latina ethnic groups were constantly in conflict with each other.
