344,748 Nuclear Electricity Supplied
France
338,671
US
789,919 Nuclear Electricity Supplied
Pros and Cons
Pros
High power output with lesser emissions
One of the most reliable source
Creates job opportunities
Cheap to run
Can have variable output
Cons
Expensive to build
Massive destruction if it goes wrong
Radioactive waste
Finite Uranium
Common Uses
Direct Uses
Providing electricity to cities
Space Exploration
Indirect Uses
Agriculture
Criminal Investigation
Medical Uses
It is found in the nucleus of an atom
Uranium
Most common element used for nuclear energy
This is because uranium undergoes spontaneous fission at a very slow rate
The Uranium-235 isotope is used for nuclear energy
Nuclear Reactors
They use a method called nuclear fission
1) Hydrogen fuel is heated up to 150 million Celsius (A magnetic field is used to keep away the heat)
2) Hydrogen atoms fuse together creating helium. This releases a lot of energy which is used to heat water in a steam turbine and generate electricity
Nuclear fission is when an unstable nucleus splits into two nuclides and produces large amount of energy
Non-renewable source of Energy
Cannot be used in a family home
