Pure Substances
COMPOUNDS
Substances that are made up of two or more different types of atoms, which are
chemically bonded
.
Eg: Carbon Dioxide Gas--> Is made up of two different types of atoms, which are Carbon and Oxygen.
Eg: Water (H20) --> Hydrogen and Oxygen (two different elements) combine to form water.
Eg: Calcium Carbonate (CaCO3) is made up of 3 different types of atoms, those of Calcium (Ca), Carbon (C) and Oxygen (O).
ELEMENTS
Substances that are made up of same type of atoms.
Eg: Copper Wire--> Copper wire is only made up of Copper atoms.
Eg: Hydrogen Gas (H2)--> It is made up of two hydrogen atoms.
Eg: Nitrogen Gas (N2)--> It is made up of 2 Nitrogen atoms.
Metals
Non-Metals
Impure Substances
MIXTURES
Substances that are made up of two or more different types of atoms that are
not chemically bonded
.
Eg: Solution of Salt (NaCl) and Water (H2O)
Eg: Air- it is a mixture of gases such as Nitrogen (N2), Hydrogen (H2), Carbon Dioxide (CO2), Nitrogen (N2), etc.
Eg: Alloys such as Brass--> is made up of Copper (Cu) and Zinc (Zn)
