Hearing Impaired
A term used for both Deaf and Hard of Hearing people
Today, most Deaf people do not like this term
In the mid-late 1900's, people only used this term for anyone who had hearing loss
Deaf Community
"Participation in the Deaf community is usually by those who consider themselves deaf and are accepted by the community"
Have to know sign language
Have to have respect for Deaf individuals/understand their culture
Many subgroups; hard of hearing, Deaf, parents of deaf children, children of deaf parents, interpreters, students, etc.
