Struggle to build a civilisation
Meaning
Ralph and P believe that structure, rules, and maintaining a signal fire are the greatest priorities, while Jack believes hunting, violence, and fun should be prioritized over safety, protection, and planning for the future. (conflict)
agree to abide by Ralph’s rules and democratic decision-making, the slow and thoughtful process of building an orderly society proves too difficult for many of the boys
Near the end of the novel, even Ralph is tempted by Jack’s authoritarian regime, regularly forgetting why the fire and rescue is so important.

CHAP 3
When the meeting was over they’d work for five minutes, then wander off or go hunting.”(id over ego) “I was talking about smoke! Don’t you want to be rescued? All you can talk about is pig, pig, pig!” “But you like it!” shouted Ralph. “You want to hunt! While I—”
CHAP 4
“For hunting. Like in the war. You know—dazzle paint. Like things trying to look like something else—” (face paint= freedom shame of civilisation)
:“The job was too much. We needed everyone.” “We have lots of assemblies. Everybody enjoys speaking and being together. We decide things. But they don’t get done.(id over ego, hunting over rescue)
This from Piggy, and the wails of agreement from some of the hunters, drove Jack to violence
(violence and savagery was another struggle)
CHAP 2
“But there isn’t a beastie!” (R does this cuz he knows fear will only break them which it eventually does)
If a ship comes near the island they may not notice us. So we must make smoke on top of the mountain. We must make a fire.” “A fire! Make a fire!” (b4 R can give proper commands, they run like kids and aren't patient or mature enough to listen and obey)
which leads them to not made was shelters down there by the beach, put first things first and act proper and set the whole island on fire, killing a littlun.
“I got the conch,” said Piggy indignantly. “You let me speak!” “The conch doesn’t count on top of the mountain,” said Jack, “so you shut up.” (ongoing struggle in whole book, as time passes, conch which is symbol of civillisation & what diff humans from animals, slowly loses importance)
CHAP 5
To Ralph, seated, this seemed the breaking up of sanity. Fear, beasts, no general agreement that the fire was all-important: and when one tried
to get the thing straight the argument sheered off, bringing up fresh, unpleasant matter.
“And you shut up! Who are you, anyway? Sitting there telling people what to do. You can’t hunt, you can’t sing—” “Why should choosing make any difference? Just giving orders that don’t make any sense—”“The rules!” shouted Ralph. “You’re breaking the rules!” “Who cares?” (id over ego)“Bollocks to the rules! We’re strong—we hunt! If there’s a beast, we’ll hunt it down! We’ll close in and beat and beat and beat—!”
“If I blow the conch and they don’t come back; then we’ve had it. We shan’t keep the fire going. We’ll be like animals. We’ll never be rescued.”“If you don’t blow, we’ll soon be animals anyway. I can’t see what they’re doing but I can hear.”
(descend 2 savagery)
CHAP 1
“Aren’t there any grown-ups?” “No.” “Then we’ll have to look after ourselves.”
“I’m chief then.” (Ralph is elected leader for superficial reasons. while Jack clearly has some experience in exerting control over others Piggy, who lacks the physical stature or charsima of a leader despite his intelligence, the talents that set Ralph apart from the others (acrobatics and swimming) serve no practical purpose in the jungle, while Jack's recreational activity as choir leader serves him as a leader in training.
CHAP 6
“ ’Course I’m frightened. Who wouldn’t be?”(fear causes them 2 choose btw reason or hunting)
“Let’s have a fort. “There’s no food here,” said Ralph, “and no shelter. Not much fresh water.” “This would make a wizard fort.” “We can roll rocks—” (id over ego)
