What are the challenges facing BB in your school today?
Compulsory UG Policy
Large cohort sizes
Difficult to reach out to every Boy to mentor them and help them fulfil their potentials
Not every Boy gets opportunities to step up into leadership or are able to form meaningful relationships with Officers and seniors
Harder to organise cohort level and consequently, Company level, activities because it requires a lot of coordination and communication across many parties
Some Boys have poor attitudes because they were forced to join BB
Don't want to wake up early on Saturday
Not Christian: not keen on participating in CE sessions or feel uncomfortable with prayer and mentions of God
Wanted to be in a different UG
Covid-19 Situation means no physical interaction and a shift to online parades
Many badgework activities (Drill, Adventure) cannot be conducted online, or are very difficult to follow
Difficult to engage Boys online (cameras off, refusal to answer even when arrowed, not sure if they're even present)
Difficult to build personal relationships with, and between, the Boys due to the lack of time for meaningful or informal interactions
Cancellation of many activities (camps, CQ, Blaze etc.)
Lack of opportunities for leadership or participating in activities that are considered part of the "BB Experience"
Lack of experience in planning and executing activities for those in leadership positions, resulting in fewer opportunities for clear guidance or mentorship from Officers
Manpower difficulties
Officers and teachers have conflicting ideas and expectations of what their job scopes should be
Teachers find it a chore to come for parades because they do not have the existing relationships with the Boys that the Officers do
Officers end up shouldering most of the burden and may inadvertently exclude teachers from the process, which further disinclines them from being engaged
High turnover rate/ Increasing burnout
Short lifespan of Officers (they leave after 2-3 years of service) due to conflicting commitments (university, work etc.)
Lack of experienced Officers to lead the Company as there are fewer senior Officers who remain
Low recruitment due to high levels of commitment required to be an Officer due to the amount of time that it takes to handle administrative and operational matters alongside the everyday mentorship of the Boys
Incompatibility between traditional programme and new "internet" generation
Tend to disengage/ lose interest in activities very quickly if it doesn't fit into their idea of "fun" or worthwhile
Children have shorter attention spans, a greater dependence on smartphones/ electronic devices
Boys are no longer motivated by ranks or badges and they don't find curriculum (Adventure, Drill) enjoyable, causing them to show greater preference for other CCAs
Top-down or disciplinary approaches are no longer effective ways to deal with Boys
