Corruption of Totalitarianism
Changing the truth
The Party goes back and edits anything that goes against their idea of perfection. They rewrite history.
O'Brien says to Winston that if the Party says 2+2=5 then it equal 5.
Create obvious fabrications and manipulate people into believing them without a second thought.
Try to suppress freedom
They remain under constant observation. There are signs everywhere that say Big Brother is watching. There's also the telescreens which can never be turned off and are usually placed at the center of rooms so they can always monitor the citizens even in their own homes. Privacy would be a thing of the past but the Party removed that from the past and then removed any memory of that removal.
If they were to ever act or even think against the Party, they will be caught and killed.
Even an expression that looks wrong could result in torture, forced labor, or death.
Denying reality
Party members like O'Brien are so intrenched in their beliefs and arguments yet they make absolute no sense. But because they hold all the power, they can do as they please and kill anyone that disagrees.
They say that reality only exists in the mind and the Party controls the mind so therefore the Party controls reality.
Destroys individuality
They want everyone to all be of one mind and that is the mind of the Party.
Suppress instincts like the instinct of family
Want to erase emotions like love and replace it with love only for Big Brother and the Party.
It is inevitable that they would become corrupt
Why do they become corrupt?
Absolute power corrupts absolutely
The desire for total control and power corrupts them
Why is Orwell conveying this theme?
It serves as a warning. His book does not hold back to show graphic details to hammer home how awful life will become under a totalitarian rule
