mini-model seminar
As Emma said...in STEM, provided a...
shall I start?
I realised I read the question wrong
I hope I got it right because I was hoping to talk about...
for me, well, ...was an amazing start...it starts casual and then builds up to a more academic level. it's less boring for the students
however, asking sts to jump from informal to academic was a big leap
refers to podcast on STEM -
however / but
I'm not sure if...
but overall :
I've never written a blog post before in my life
the format has been interesting
sharing a learning process
sorry, I'm going on longer than I intended
for what it's worth, I am going to do some blog posts
a model for how a model should look is helpful - the sts can see
another means to express themselves & communicate meaning
using new language e.g. discourse markers /
consultations without inhibitions
led onto discussions about language discussion
I just wanted to pick up on...
how academic is it?
all writing is interactive - blogging is even more so, comments, the chat that ensues
if we look at the genre, it is extremely useful
prompts - reflection - it makes the learning visible (reflection)
if you get them to think about it and verbalise it in writing
often by sharing, we learn from one another
focus on process rather than the product then it's well worth it
one of the tasks I set was to find a really really formal blog
I had the same experience - I failed to find...
isn't that because you want people to communicate so they communicate another way?
I think that's why they enjoyed it - that was the first thing they did. enjoyed that part more than producing
were you getting a lot of reflection?
seems to be coming out automatically
last year we had to push - this year it's the opposite
students writing about reflecting on what they'd done and how - giving themselves
preferred form of communication - one step up from texting
I think Neil mentioned it earlier...
I remember when....
it's gonna be public and you see others and it's not about being perfect
we talked early in the course, some sts had...
if you hadn't blogged, would you in the future?
no - would open up to online criticism
so not looking at further benefit
that's a very good point that Emma makes
as an academic when you publish, so in a sense it's a good way to become aware of putting yourself out there and getting feedback
so would you include that as one of the key learning experiences then?
yes, so holistic
self-confidence
it can give you that voice
it helped sts to get to know each other better as people
they really used the blogs to know their classmates
I was just saying I agree
sorry, I was gonna say...
but also for us as teachers, it's helped us to....
that's an excellent point because....
they seem to express themselves more and better in writing
by reading the blogs, you get these amazing points....but they thought about it and it's a bit safer
normally you'd get that in the breaktimes
do you think we should move on to the next one?
I think it's kind of covered
so look at moving forward?
some sts have talked about what they're struggling with - helpful for teachers, especially in week 1
I think it would be useful
I'm just wondering, are there any downsides to the blogging experience?
I don't know about downsides but maybe...
I feel like we kind of decided that as we were going through
I found myself....
maybe some different prompts...
yeah maybe we could...
I think to put a blog post in front of them, it might be a bit of a culture shock - putting themselves out there
I don't know what effect that might have on them
in terms of moving forward
one of my students...
it would be helpful if you....
so not used to seminar situation
giving an anecdote / story
it just made me think 'this is completely new for them'
so the seminar session next week
I agree...
but when you do pick on someone...
yes, the same happened to me...
I got some long pauses with some questions and I had to say to students 'it's ok to say no'
exactly, exactly
do you agree or disagree just to get them started
I think...
I've had some people do this in my group...
did your students do a recorded seminar discussion?
no
ours did and they had prepared a mini-presentation
I thought it would be good to have a video of how a seminar is in practice
I'm glad that...
instead of...
I found that modelling things really really helps
but I guess we don't always think about it when it comes to live sessions
I see we've got 2 minutes left
I think we also just need to remind ourselves of the value of the process
pre-sessionals just the starting point, isn't it?
sorry Neil
and it doesn't happen all at once
you're there to reach a conclusion together
they'll have plenty of opportunities to
