Schools & Society Summer 2021
History and Political Goals of Schooling
Pioneers of public education and the founding fathers wished to create a sense of unified common cultural values based on religious morality and civic engagement in order to prevent future revolutions
Public schools are often used to advance political and economic ideologies that do not improve the conditions of human beings.
The gradual changing of the Pledge of Allegiance is an excellent way to observe the political concerns in schools. Changes were made due to distrust of immigrants, rejection of communism, and reinforcing religious commitment.
Horace Mann supported the idea that schooling and education were the keys to creating a good, moral society. He believed that without commonly held political beliefs, society would be doomed to violent revolution.
Mann considered voting a primary means to a better society and a more politically engaged population, though there is no proof that attending school improves voter turnout.
Many students leave school with a concept of passive citizenship, meaning obedience to law and authority, rather than community engagement/activism.
Equality & Diversity in Public Schooling
Within the current system, "equality of opportunity" is generally defined as everyone having the same opportunity to pursue wealth.
This opportunity to pursue wealth does not necessarily indicate equity, or equality of income or social status.
Standardized tests as a way to measure intelligence, therefore seeking to eliminate any hindrances of social background because everyone is, in theory, held to the same standard.
Economic Goals of Schooling & the Global Economy
Betsy DeVos encouraged charter schools and the general concept that the school system should be run similarly to the free market and would be fueled by parental choice.
Human capital is a major driving force in the American school system.
The economic goals of schooling have shifted its focus from creating a devoted worker, to creating a worker in a global economy
The Role of the Teacher
Parents, society, and educators often have conflicting ideas of what the role of the teacher should be.
Roles of the American teacher have shifted over time in accordance with the contemporary political goals being focused on at a specific point in time.
The feminization of the teaching profession has been used as backing to underpay and undervalue teachers.
Teachers have long been the protectors and enforces of morality.
