CAPSULES
Capsules are solid dosage forms in which the drug substance is enclosed within either a hard or soft soluble shell, usually formed from gelatin.

Disadvantages : not suitable for aqueous or hydro alcoholic solutions
not useful for efflorescent or deliquescent materials
concentrated solutions which require previous dilution are unsuitable for capsules
Advantages: tasteless , odorless, can be easily administered
attractive in appearance
economical
easy to handle
they can be filled quickly etc

Size of capsules : largest capsule is 000 and having 1.37 ml volume capacity
smallest capsule is 5 and having 0.15 ml volume capacity

Soft gelatin capsule
Soft gelatin capsules are one piece hermetically sealed containing liquid ,suspension or semisolid

Hard gelatin capsule
The hard gelatin capsule consists of two places in the form of cylinders closed at one end .The shorter piece is called cap . The cap fits over open end of longer piece called body .
