Copyright Law
The copyright law protects original owners of work, be it Art, Software, or anything that was made by them.
It protects them from other people stealing work and making a profit off of it.
A patent is given out to inventors by the government, it gives the power to stop anyone from producing a patented product by the inventor (Only for a limited time.)
Copyright Could stifle innovation due to the fact that people would be scared to infringe someone's copyright by accident.
It could also stifle competition, various competitors could stop competing due to someone's copyright law.
Copyleft is a general method for making a program free, this isn't limited to a program, this could be anything else. This law requires all future modified and extended versions to be free.
Free as in the sense of freedom, not "Zero Price".
