Intervention Classroom with students on IEPs
Unit: 1 week
Learning Objectives/Measurable Goals:
By the end of the IEP, given a text at the student's instructional level, student will be able to CREATE a story map listing 3 main ideas from the text in 3/4 opportunities as measured by work samples.
By the end of the IEP, given two versions for the same text (ex Cinderella), student will be able to write out/Explain (bullet points) 3 similarities from the texts in ¾ trials as measured by work samples.
By the end of the IEP, given a reading passage/book at the student’s instructional level, student will be able to STATE the main idea using three details from the text in 4/5 opportunities as measured by running records.
Description of Unit:
Students will be able to find the main ideas of texts and how to compare and contrast two different texts. The unit will sate with understanding comparing and contrasting and then move on to finding main ideas. Graphic organizers and the use of story maps will be a focus of the unit when comparing texts.
Content/knowledge and Skills Learned:
Understanding the vocabulary: comparing and contrasting
Deciding main ideas of texts (using story maps)
Using Venn diagrams with compare main ideas of two texts with support
Using Venn diagrams with compare main ideas of two texts independently
Activities/Formative Assessment and Summative Hands on Activity
Day 1. Group discussion/anchor chart discussing what similar means and we would repeat this process for the word differences as well.
Day 2. Students would state how two objects in the classroom are similar and different
Day 3 and 4. Read one version of a book. After reading the ext: group discussion on the main events of the story and creating a class story map. Then repeat with other version of text
(Day 4, Activity 5) Group Venn Diagram comparing and contrasting two texts. (listing who was able to give examples)
Day 5, activity 6).Students would create their own story maps and Venn diagram comparing and contrasting two new texts.
Assessments
Activities below would be used as formative assessments each day. (checklists measuring who participated correctly/incorrectly in group discussions) Summative hands-on activity would be #6 on top of the multiple choice assessment from part 1.
