Purpose

Medicine & Counselling
communicate with ethnic minority patients
health care workers can use of an interpreter, use pictures, demonstrate via body language (avoid the use of common gestures that may have different cultural meanings)
Education
schools are becoming more diverse
successful educators are effective communicators
Obstacles to effective intercultural communication

The importance of nonverbal cues
Cultural misunderstanding and miscommunication can be greatly reduced by an increased awareness of cultural differences in nonverbal communication patterns

Counsellors would enhance and clarify counseling interaction with identification and assessment of client’s nonverbal communication
