Capitalisation and Punctuation
at the end of a sentence
full stop (also called period)
exclamation mark
question mark
use within the sentence
dash (—)
connects two ideas very strongly to each other
interrupts others to add own thoughts ( can also indicate sudden change in thought/tone)
ellipses (…)
indicates omission of words
helps add suspense
used to show distraction and long breaks
semi colon (;)
connects two closely related ideas
also used in a sentence which has multiple lists
both have to be independent clauses
comma (,)
to separate items in a list
before a conjunction
to separate the actual words of a speaker
for a small pause
after words like well/yes/no when they come at the beginning of the sentence
remember these will never be used the end of a sentence (ellipses is an exception which can be used even at the end os a sentence)
all proper nouns
special names of people, places, animals, and things
first letter of every sentence
names of days, months, holidays
Example: Eid, Christmas, June
always capitalise titles like Dr./Mr./Mrs./Ms.
