Feudal System
King - Nobles - Knights - Peasants
Nobles promised to swear loyalty to the king and provide him with knights to gain land
This chain kept going on e.g. the knights had to swear loyalty to the nobles to have their own land and peasants
This ensured William could raise an army
Everyone was answerable to the king
He dealt with rebellions
The Harrying of the North was said to be one of William's cruelest acts
Nobles rebelled and took over York
He turned the place into a wasteland, with 100 years before its effects were reversed
This made others think before rebelling
Domesday Book

He wanted to know:
How much soldiers he could recruit
If anyone was gaining more power than him
Who owned what land
How much he could tax people
