"Tutee Engagement System" For Math and Science
Teaching Approaches
Authoritative
Lecture centered approach for teaching more material quickly
For students who need to cram or be refreshed
Generally the beginning of the tutoring session
Notes, Slideshows, communication and explanations
Have it prepared and ready to go for the session
Make sure information is clear and concise and important details are highlighted
Demonstrative
Demonstrations to apply learned material
Generally the middle of the tutoring session
For students who just learned material but don't know its application
Take up examples, Show concepts, start to show the application of the material
Have examples from students homework or have your own
Make sure students are fully engaged throughout the explanations
Communication
Make sure they are listening
Talk to the student every few seconds
Make sure they understand as you explain material
Constantly ask them questions about the material, questions about reassurance and ask them to explain back to the tutor
Attitude
Have Patience
Allow the student to have ideas of their own
Be excited, but not so excited that it seems fake
Be Authoritative, not Authoritarian
Be realistic
be a mentor who shares practices and advice
If explaining something doesnt work the first two times, change your tact and your method of explanation
Games lol
Math
Science
Theres like 1,000,000 online simulation games
Chemical Equation Balancing
Literally just race them by competing to see who can finish questions faster
24 (mental math)
Randomly generate 4 numbers from 1-9 and using +x/-, get 24
Derivation Game
Randomly Generate functions to differentiate
Desmos Drawings
The goal is to create an engaging atmosphere with slight stress to get them to use the material they just learned
Atmosphere
Make it comfortable and feel like a hangout
Crack some jokes once in a while
Assure them that all questions are welcomed
Keep the focus on the content
Enjoyment comes from immersion which stems from focus. Distractions remove the focus.
Allow atmosphere of exploration in ideas and reasoning
"Why does this do this"
Why doesnt it work this way
Also integrate the habit of independent learning by explaining to having the student answer their own questions if they can
Do Not Digress too much
Make sure they get their moneys worth
People want a teacher who actually teaches the material
Staying on topic keeps the student focused
Facilitative
Self-Learning Approach for critical thinking
For students who are comfortable with the material and can be challenged
Generally the end of the tutoring session
Have some fun and challenge the tutee.
Do hard problems, oftentimes, challenging problems like contest questions can make the problems theyre already doing seem like a cakewalk
integrate their interests into applications. For example, if theyre into video games, you can integrate math problems like calculus and optimization.
have them explain more abstract areas of the material. If you cant explain something, you dont know it well enough. For example, if you're doing advanced functions, ask them to explain how you would find the roots of a local max/min or smth
Play some games and make it a competition
Be Punctual
Makes you sound more confident
