Teaching Materials in EIL. Aya Matsuda
Introduction
Brown (1995) includes teaching materials to six components of a language curriculum ( needs analysis, goals, testing, teaching and program evaluation.
Input - Textbooks and Audio Visual materials enrich the classroom input providing language samples that differ from the voice and style of the teacher
An ultimate purpose of teaching EIL is to prepare the students to apply English to be a citizen of the global community, which is linguistiaclly and culturally diverse.
The availability of edited materials vary from one context to another
Teaching materials might be known as "any systematic description of the techniques and exercises to be used in classroom teaching"
which is "broad enough to encompass lesson plans, can accomodate books, packets of AV aids, games that go on in the language classroom.
Variety of forms, books, workbooks, teacher's resource books, realia and AVs.
Traditional practices and Principles
English is unique in that it is a language with "multiple norms and diverse systems". (Canagarajah, 2006, p.199)
One of the noticable aims is to develop awareness of and sensitivity toward differences- in forms, uses and users- and learn to resect those differencies.
Traditional ELT teaching materials developed for classroom use, tend to focus on the 'standard" varieties from the UK and the US.
A language is not merely a combination of discrete linguistic and metalinguistic knowledge, but rather a dynamic system embedded in a social context.
How accurately the textbook and other teaching materials represent the complex reality of English today is the question one must ask in evaluating, selecting and developing materials.
The appropriateness levels, integration of skills being taught in class, and quality and amount of exercises are examples of questions teachers ask.
Criteria for evauating Teaching Materials
Steps for supplementing materials
Before evaluating the teaching materials, the trainee's needs must be revisited
The gaps between student's needs and what the materials provide can be explored by asking questions.
Advancements in instructional media, allow the educators to access different types of materials
Supplemental materials
Other textbooks and pre-packaged materials, audio-visuals and Media
Conclusion
This chapter presented a series of questions one can use to assess how precisely and deliberately the material represents the features of EIL use

Which variety ofEnglish is theMaterial based on?
The dominance of Inner Circle (Karchu, 1985), especially the UK and the US is obvious in representations of English users.
In 7th grade textbooks applied in Japan, non-Japanese characters were from Inner Circle countries, the Outer and Expanding Circle covers only 10% of the total
The disadvantages of it students may be confused by varieties and uses of English that differ from Inner Circle English, consider them as deficient than different.
The ways of increasing the learners' awareness. The first one is to use pre-packaged teaching materials
The dominant instructional model of the course should be selected due to the purpose of the curriculum and the needs of the learners and the varieties of English in textbooks.
The second aspect is through supplemental materials created for pedagogical and non-pedagogical purposes
The last way is to increase students' meta-knowledge about Englishes by making it a lesson focus.
The inclusive provision represents the profile of Englishusers more precisely and assists students to develop a more realistic expectations about their future interlocutors.

In general English courses, learners use English in international contexts, cultural content must be drawn from diverse resources.
Global culture is presented in English and Science teachers' materials for example, collaboratively developing a unit on world ecology.

However, to consider his variety is the only correct one is unaccurate, it leads to negative attitudes.
It is more reasonable to focus in one of the varieties of English
