CHAPTER 4: Process Sampels - Coggle Diagram
CHAPTER 4:
Process Sampels
1.0 Unit Samples
Once of the process technician responsible is to operate and control the process unit to ensure they produce good product quality in the most economic manner.
Purpose of collecting unit sampels:
Verification of process stream composition.
Verification of on-specification product.
Troubleshooting process problems.
Comparison with on-line analyzers.
Categories of sampels:
:check: Feedstock
:check: Finished Product
:check: Process streams
:check: Auxiliary systems and utilities
:check: Environment
2.0 Sample Collection & Technician Health
Hazard of Collecting Samples:
-Expose to the hazardous gas and liquid to their body ->inhalation/skin contact:
:-1::skin-tone-2:Butadiene, benzene
:-1::skin-tone-2:Long term effect such as cancer, nervous system dysfunction, leukemia
-Explosion
Safety Precautions for Collecting Samples:
-Use the proper PPE for the job.
-Check the sample area for a source of ignition.
-Leave a vapor space above the liquid in the sample container.
-Stand upwind.
-Label and identify all samples.
-Never use a leaking container.
-Carry samples in sample baskets.
3.0 Sample Containers
Several reason for variety of sample containers:
Volume required
Type of sample (gas / liquid / solid)
Temperature (hot / cold)
Sensitive to light
Container material react with sample
Some component can migrate into glass container.
Sample containers variety of size, shape and material:
Clear glass, wide-mouth jars varying in volume from 4 to 32 ounces
Clear or amber bottles of varying volume
Pint, quart and gallon round paint cans
Plastic bottles of varying sizes
One gallon oblong cans
Plastic bags
Rubber football bladders
Stainless steel cylinders called sample bombs
4.0 Sample Identification
Samples should always be tagged (labelled) immediately after collection to ensure all the information about sampling activities are recorded for further analysis.
Information required in the tag:
:warning: Process unit name
:warning: Sample name
:warning: Date
:warning: Time collected
:warning: Analytical test required
5.0 Sampling with Gas Detectors
Sampling of the ambient air is an integral part of any safety, environmental, or health program for several reason, some of which are noted here:
:fire: Assure compliance to environmental regulation.
:fire: Detect fugitive emission.
:fire: Protect employee and contractor safety and health.
Types of Gas Detector:
LEL Meter (Lower Explosive Limit)
-To detect explosive gas
Oxygen Meters
-To detect oxygen concentration in atmosphere.
Detector Tubes
-Design to detect specific gas depend on type of tube used.
