Kate meeting notes - 2021-07-05
Just Kate and I present
Kate will now be away until the 2nd of August
Go on leave soon!
Thesis structure
Difficult as thesis has morphed into two distinct parts
Now synthesis of previous research in Roman Britain and analysis at Roman Bath
Look at history theses to see how they have handled similar synthetic aspects
Dan Pascoe recently overhauled the structure of his thesis and may have tackled similar things, get in touch with him to see how he resolved this
Kate is reluctant to have thesis so heavily front-weighted, but difficult to split the methods up from the synthetic parts
Perhpas have intro -> Bath stuff -> synthetic overview?
It is ok to change thesis title and plan, as most people do at some point
Would it be better to have project targeting building stone and roman brick and tile as a whole, with Roman Bath an in depth case study?
Obviously not very practical if no stone sampling undertaken :(
Deadline for stone sampling
Need to plan out the sampling and figure out when is the absolute latest I can get it done if HE give me permission
This deadline date will be important for applying for extensions etc.
Can always do the sampling and add it into thesis post-exaination with examiners' permission if HE respond too late
Where and why would I sample different outcrops? How much time would this take? What permissions would I need?
Sample Bath Oolite, Twinhoe Beds and Combe Down Oolite, sample north and south of the river and include locations suggested as possible source by others
Might apply for isotopic analyses as these would give me another scale of data to work with, and potentially shed light on some of Hayward's wider analyses
Progress of analysis at Bath
On sherd 599
If 50 per session, then 8 sessions left, but maybe only 3-4 left at Bath itself
Meeting with Stephen
Need to see how much he is happy for me to do with the stone => wait for HE approval (extending if necessary) or change sampling strategy to ex-situ material alone?
Discuss this in meeting or in person, whichever is first
Need to arrange a full supervisory meeting with Stephen for when Kate gets back, e.g. August or early September
Email him and also ask about the CBM from Cunliffe's excavations in the West Baths
Need to double check Cunliffe report to make sure that he didn't say what was happening with the CBM
Chapter feedback
No feedback from Kate yet as not had time to read it, and won't until her return
