Types of Hormonal and Metabolic Dysfunction
Antidiuretic hormon secretion
A condition in which high levels of a hormone cause the body to retain water.
Symptoms can vary depending on how rapidly the condition develops. In some cases, nausea and vomiting, headache, confusion, weakness, and fatigue may be experienced.
Treatment consists of diet modifications and fluids
Treatments include fluid restriction and, possibly, medications to adjust electrolyte balance. Underlying conditions also need treatment.
Addisons disease
insufficient levels of steroid hormones
laboratory analysis
Treatments with IV fluids
Hypothyroidism
treatment consists of thyroid hormone replacement.
A condition in which the thyroid gland doesn't produce enough thyroid hormone.
Major symptoms include fatigue, cold sensitivity, constipation, dry skin, and unexplained weight gain.
Hyperthyroidism
The overproduction of a hormone by the butterfly-shaped gland in the neck (thyroid).
Symptoms include unexpected weight loss, rapid or irregular heartbeat, sweating, and irritability, although the elderly often experience no symptoms.
Treatment consists of antithyroid medications
Treatments include radioactive iodine, medications, and sometimes surgery.
Diabetes Insipidus
A disorder of salt and water metabolism marked by intense thirst and heavy urination.
In addition to extreme thirst and heavy urination, other symptoms may include getting up at night to urinate or bed-wetting.
Depending on the form of the disorder, treatments might include hormone therapy, a low-salt diet, or drinking more water.
Cushing Syndrome
4 major processes
long term administation of corticosteroid
tumors of pituitary glad
tumors of adrenal gland
Ectopic production
Treatment options include reducing steroid use, surgery, radiation, and medication.
