Three-Part Lesson vs. Traditional Math Lesson
Traditional Math Lesson
Teacher lectures and students listen (maybe take notes)
Teacher gives questions and the students work on them (maybe in class or maybe just assigned for homework)
The next day the questions are taken up (maybe all the questions or maybe the answers are just posted, maybe kids go up to the board to answer questions and others mark their own pages)
Only textbook or photocopies?
Maybe focused more on memorizing formulas or 1 way of answering a question that the students repeat in their homework
More teacher focussed
You might need only 1 period to do this lesson and then practice is assigned for homework
The answer is important
If the lesson is mostly lecture and work is done at home the teacher doesn't know if the student really understood the concept being taught
Three-Part Math Lesson
Minds on/ Activating prior knowledge section
Short lesson from teacher
More student focussed
Students have an opportunity to explore the math concept with maybe 1 problem
At the end, students have a chance to consolidate what they have learned and to reflect
You need a good chunk of time to do a 3 part lesson like back to back periods but sometimes thats not possible
Not necessarily reliant on textbooks or photocopies although you still might use them
A bulk of the work in done in class rather than for homework
How you arrive at the answer is important
Allows the teacher to make observations while students work in class
