IoT
-
1.5 billion daily messages such as temperature, energy use and operating functions
-
Software includes a cloud-based dashboard application to manage volume and detect events such as refrigeration failures.
VP of Technology, Sanjay Radhakrishnan oversees Walmart’s IoT platforms and applications
-
"We leverage infrastructure in our own datacenters, and we also leverage infrastructure at top cloud providers. The focus really has been to ensure that our IoT pipeline software can access the right infrastructure at scale, considering things like latency and connectivity concerns."
-
"Different pathways in the cloud based on data usage patterns. Our IoT applications can access data across the edge and cloud to solve business problems. We are cloud agnostic and leverage a dual-prong strategy that includes access to infrastructure in our own datacenters and top cloud providers."
"Demand Response" is an in-house developed IoT application - utilised for in store temperature control
enables remote deployment of capabilities and control of their HPC systems in a remote manner at scale
-
Use Cases
"If they’re kind of low latency use cases, then we store data at the edge, and we have logic at the edge to fulfill those use cases."
"We are streaming data to the cloud. And in the cloud, we have multiple kind of patterns depending on data usage. We might extend the data into kind of a cold path, or a warm path, and our IoT applications have the ability to access the data, either at the edge or in the cloud."
Looking at ways they can further improve the customer experience . Through algorithms, they will continue to update algorithms as they identify trends between what the data is telling them and how they should respond. Through equipment, they will identify other equipment that can connect to and that would provide a benefit to their customer for remote diagnostics and proactive maintenance.

(2) Store HVAC and energy systems - uses IoT sensors to remotely monitor and respond to community energy consumption needs
If the signal received from the IoT system requires additional information, it is sent to the maintenance team through a cloud application
Tech stack
-
We can connect to devices all the way from BACnet to Modbus to serial communications to some of the more recent protocols like HTTP and Message Queuing Telemetry Transport (MQTT).
"Our device drivers are written in Java, and the applications themselves are all ReactJS, not GS applications that use Linux-type operating systems."
-
Challenge
The biggest challenge according to Sanjay Radhakrishnan, VP technology is in connecting so many different devices from different vendors using different vendors using different protocols and languages.
-

-
Patents (2017)
integrating IoT tags to products in order to monitor product usage and expiration dates or product recalls

Walmart pilot project
Example, a single transmitter embedded in the ceiling of a grocery store can power roughly 1,000 electronic shelf labels.
Edge Computing
-
Will allow Walmart to rent out data center processing power to local customers, autonomous vehicles and drones
Supercentres could provide shoppers with "social experiences" such as eyeglass centres and hair salons

Automation/Robotics

-
-
Challenges
-
-
Automated solutions must be accurate, actionable and frequent
manual, repetitive task such as gap and price scanning
Increased competition - Amazon, Target
Use Cases
A report noted that two stores in Texas, one in Utah and another near the company's HQ in Bentonville, Arkansas would be among the first to have robotic capabilities.
Walmart Global Tech
A team of 15,000+ software engineers, data scientists, and service professionals within Walmart focused on delivering innovations that improve how customers shop as well as empower 2.2 million associates.
Utilising automation to reduce the number of errors that take place in the repetitive steps of CI an CD

"We are ramping up our e-commerce offering with a focus on speed, accuracy and service,” said Horacio Barbeito, President/CEO Walmart Canada
-
Piloting 'ring scanner' technology which allows associates to scan items faster by working handsfree
Saeed Anslow, Senior Director Omni Channel & Online Grocery for Walmart Canada stated "We’re really trying to build on the momentum that we saw in 2020 and accelerate our plans for this year. We know the customer is going in this direction and we really want to be there for the customer. We really see the store as the real competitive advantage for us and we really want to use the store footprint. We will have lots of different models and versions out there depending on the particular market the store is in.”
