Assef - A rich child who lives in their area. He has a racist ideal of getting rid of Hazaras from where they live. He believes that Hitler did the right thing and is the antagonist in the book. He rapes Hassan and causes the split between Amir and Hassan as Amir silently watches the rape happen.

Amir begins to act out of jealously towards Hassan and begins to believe his loyalty is too much Hassan never fights back and by the time he gets raped, Amir wants to get rid of him and not talk to him again. He is upset about how he did nothing during the rape and how Hassan doesn't take any anger out on him whenever Amir is trying to start an argument.

He writes little stories when he is a young teen and just wants his father's approval on his writing. He doesn't receive the approval much at all due to the fact that his father wishes he was more into athletics and not so much reading.

He sacrifices Hassan to be able to get the blue kite as he believes the affection from his father will be able to be gotten if he wins the kite race. He lets Hassan be raped to be able to keep the kite and in the end he had a small time worth of affection but his father ultimately ended up being disappointed by him later on.
