LISTENING SKILLS
How much information you get everyday ?
plan what we are going to say in return or say important things to the other person
make some efforts to hear and understand people to get a complete message
several things to do :
show that you are listening ( nod or smile )
provide feedback to the speaker ( ask question or give feedback to show that we are listening )
pay attention ( make eye contact and ignore outside factor
dont interrupt ( respond appropriately once they finished )
Active Listening
the act of fully hearing and comprehending the meaning of what someone else is saying
avoid getting distracted by our own thoughts ( focus on the speaker and the topic instead )
don't interrupt the speaker ( once they finished, respond to the speaker )
use door openers ( to show we are interested )
keep the other person talking ( show some gestures and interested in it )
take notes of what the speakers saying ( paraphrase what whey said to make sure we are on the same page with the speaker )
Effective listening
great listener give feedback to the speaker ( help speaker know that we are listening )
give non-verbal feedback
nod your head
smile
give verbal feedback
comment : i hear you, that makes sense, uh-uh, yeah
listen fot the big picture
help the listener to stay focused what they are saying
big picture idea : listen to the overall idea the big-picture idea
big picture emotion : when our friends's emotion are unstable, show them that you are interested and be much more focused and track with what they are saying
stay focused and track with what they say
keep the conversation focused on them and onto their topic
say something if you have something to discuss about but make sure no to take over the the conversation and make the topic about us
make sure to talk in turn is concise
say what we are going to say while listening or add one or two sentence and bounce it back to the speaker
ask a follow up question or give some opinion
take action and follow up
let the person know what we are going to do about
in a professional setting : send a message with an email or send them something they asked for
in a social situation : follow up with them next time and revisit their topic ( can be with text, email or in the social media )
