There are many reasons for the an Shi rebellion, which are the concentrated reflection of various social contradictions, mainly including the contradictions between the ruling class and the people, the contradictions within the rulers and the contradictions between the central and local separatist forces, etc.

The rise of vassal towns

In the late period of Kaiyuan's reign, there was nothing wrong with the country, and Tang Xuanzong gradually lost his spirit of seeking governance.

An Lushan, who is also one of the three major soldiers, is in charge of the army alone. Among them, the elite regular army of Tang Dynasty has reached 150000, supporting the frontier. They are very popular with Xuanzong, which attracts the hatred of Prime Minister Yang Guozhong. As a result, they had a bad relationship with each other, and Tang Xuanzong did not interfere. An Lushan had a long-term ambition, and he had a heavy army in his hand, intending to rebel against the Tang Dynasty in the name of begging.
