Commercial Kangaroo Harvesting requirements
Harvesting licence
Professional harvester license
Hunters need valid firearm licences and accreditations to harvest and sell carcasses
Requirements for a harvesting license:
a valid driver’s license (to transport carcass)
a valid Firearms license
successful completion of the accreditation course (AMPG306 Use Firearms to Harvest Wild Game) for kangaroo harvesters (provided by a Registered Training Organisation)
Commercial Harvester Landholder License
Landholders need a Commercial Harvester (Kangaroo) Landholder license to allow harvesting of kangaroo on property
This license restricts to use of commercial tags on properties owned within the kangaroo management zone. Applicant of this license requires training same as those undergone by Commercial Harvesters
Non-commercial licenses exist, however carcasses aquired from these licenses cannot be sold
Commercial tags
Each kangaroo carcass must be tagged with a commercial to be sold to a licensed Animal Dealer (Kangaroo). Tags indicate that kangaroos were harvested based on the Commercial Kangaroo Harvest Management Plan and the conditions of a Commercial Harvester License
Tags can only be purchased after the commercial harvester license application and landholder consents have been approved, and can only be used within kangaroo management zones
Tags are species and zone-specific. Tags can be used on any property which has landholder consent approved by the state government. Tags must be used within the Commercial Tag Advice start and expiry dates
Tags are issued with a Commercial Tag Advice, which will state:
the start and expiry dates for the tag range (which can be up to 4 calendar months from the date of purchase or 31 December if purchased towards the end of the calendar year)
the commercial kangaroo management zone where the tags are to be used
the Commercial Harvester (Kangaroo) Licence details
the approved species and amount that can be harvested
Within zones, the quota is usually allocated on a 'first in, first served' basis. The quantity of tags available to a harvester is dependent on 1. the number of species, 2. the available quota and 3. the number of hectares available to the harvester within the commercial kangaroo management zone
Handling of Carcass
All means of transport used to transport wild game animal carcasses to wild game processing premises from any field depot must be licensed by the Food Authority
The Food Authority will issue a licensing label (sticker) to the holder of a game meat harvesting vehicle licence. This label must be displayed on the vehicle at all times
The means of transport should deliver the carcases at a temperature not exceeding 7°C (at the thermal centre of the meat product) unless delivered within 24hrs of harvest
Game meat field harvester meat-carrying compartments, equipment and appliances must be constructed so that all exposed internal surfaces :
-are durable
-are non-toxic
-are smooth-surfaced
-are corrosion resistant
-are impervious
-resist food, detergents and sanitising agents under normal operating conditions
-do not transmit odour or taste
-can withstand repeated cleaning and sanitising
-allow visivle contamination to be easily detected
-have sealed joints
-can be cleaned effectively
Also must be designed to exclude:
entry of animals (including dogs, cats, birds, rodents, insects)
-harbouring of vermin
-dust, rain, and other environmental contaminants
Hygiene and handling
Operators need to maintain appropriate hygiene. Field processors must ensure that their vehicles and equipment:
are cleaned and sanitised whenever necessary to prevent contamination of wild game meat and wild game meat products
are cleaned before operations begin and end
are dry cleaned at the end of each shift
are kept in a good state of repair.
Full requirements are set out in Australian Standard for Hygienic Production of Game Meat for Human Consumption AS4464 – 2007.
