10.4 Styles of leadership
Autocratic
Leadership where all decision making is kept at the center of the organisation. The staff have little or no staff - only the SLT
Laissez-faire
Leadership that leave much of the business decision making to the workforce - a 'hands off' approach, which is opposite to autocratic
Democratic
Leadership that promotes the active participation of workers in making and taking decisions
10.3 Qualities of leaders
Ability to think beyond the boundaries
Multi-talented
Desire to succeed and natural self-confidence
Incisive mind
10.2 Important leadership roles
Manager:
person appointed to be responsible for setting objectives, organisation of resources and motivating staff so that the organisations aims are met.
Worker representative:
person elected by workforce to represent the workforce
Director:
senior manager elected into office by shareholders in an incorporated business
Supervisors:
appointed by management to watch over the work of others. Not decision making role but they lead a team of people to achieve pre-set goals
10.5 McGregor's theory X and theory Y
Theory Y - managers view workers as enjoying work, they are prepared to take on responsibility and are hardworking
His theory was that there were two extreme management views about workers.
Theory X - managers view workers as lazy, dislike work and are only focused on their own benefit
10.6 Choice of leadership style
There is no right or wrong type of leadership - it is based on these factors
Amount of time available for consultation
Attitude of managers
Importance of situation and risks involved
Attitude of workforce
Training and experience of the workforce
There is also another type of leader called an
informal leader.
They have no formal authority but has the respect of the colleagues and some power over them
10.7 Emotional intelligence (EI)
Means that manager have the ability to understand their own emotions, and those of the people they work with, to achieve better business performance.
