Challenges in Teaching Music
Budget Constraints
Large inventory of instruments are in need of repair
Purchasing new music
Performing music that comes from a variety of styles and composers, particularly those as diverse as our students
Needing to replace old instruments or purchase new ones to grow the program
Inviting special guests to come in and work with students
Providing role models of success so students can see and feel themselves as represented
Inclusivity, Diversity, Equity, and Accessibility
Many students are unable to afford instrument rentals, personal instruments, or consumables
Teaching music of other cultures and/or styles respectfully and avoiding appropriation
Teaching music that recognizes student identity and/or interests
Private lessons and previous (public) music education experiences are a luxury many students don't have
Student Engagement
Interest and engagement is difficult to upkeep during COVID
Access to devices or technology is inconsistent and varies student to student
If students don't care for music, schools lose sections of music
Developing student leadership
Community Support
Support for the arts is difficult to garner from the public compared to STEM and sports
Other colleagues and/or administration may not value music as much
School/community culture that is slow or difficult to change
Reaching out to feeder school students and teachers
