Dualism
Mental phenomena (res cogitans): memory, learning, consciousness
Material phenomena (res extensa): molecular dynamics, synaptic processes, reflexes, automatic movements
-
Monism
1) Physicalism: there is no mind, just matter: everything follows physical laws
2) Idealism: there is no matter, just mind: everything follows mental laws
-
Sourse of knowledge
-
Empiricism (ML model): we start with a blank state and get all our knowledge from sensory experience, knowledge is discoreved by induction
Inductive Reasoning
Analogy: given that two entities share some properties, infer that they share other properties as well (sugar and flour are white, I can bake pizza with just sugar and water)
Causal Inference: after observing an effect, infer the occurence of its cause (I hear piano music, someone must be playing the piano)
Generalization: from a property of a sample, infer the property of the population (50% of people in this room wear glasses, 50% of the people in the world wear glasses)

Model Evaluation
-
Generality: the model's ability to generalize accross: different sets of stimuli, different conditions, different type of responses
Descriptive Adequacy: accuracy of a model in predicting a data set, both qualitatively and quantitatively
-
-
Simplicity: number of "free" parameters, complexity of the achitecture
