Stop Bullying on the Spot
Do:
Intervene immediately
Separate the kids
Make sure everyone is safe
Meet any medical needs
Stay calm
Model respectful behavior
Don't:
Ignore it
Immediately try to sort out facts
Force kids to say publicly what they saw
Question children involved in front of others
Talk to kids involved while they are together
Make them apologize on the spot
Get police help or medical attention if:
A weapon is involved
There are threats of serious injury
There are threats of hate-motivated violence
There is serious bodily harm
There is sexual abuse
Anyone is accused of illegal acts
Find Out What Happened
Keep all children involved separated
Get the story from several sources
Listen without blaming
Don't call it "bullying" while you are figuring out what happened
Determine if it's Bullying
Determine if there is a history between the kids involved
Determine if there is a power imbalance
Determine if this is a recurring thing
