The Roles Children Play in Bullying
Avoid common labels of bully and victim
Labels have unintended consequences: communicates that child's behavior cannot change, child might have multiple roles in different situations, doesn't account for other factors such as peer influence or school climate
Kids who Bully
Engage in bulling behavior toward peers
Often have risk factors that facilitate bullying behaviors
Socially Dominant vs. Socially Isolated
Aggressive, easily frustrated, limited parental influence, difficulty with rules, view violence positively, friends who are bully
Require support to change behaviors
Kids who are Bullied
Targets of bulling behavior
Often have risk factors for being bullied
Viewed as different and/or weak; low self-esteem; have fewer friends; don't get along well with others
Require help learning how to respond to bullying
Kids who Assist
Don't start the bullying, but encourage and occasionally join
Kids who Reinforce
Not directly involved, but will laugh and support those who are bullying which can encourage it to continue
Kids who Defend
Care for and possibly defend student who is bullied
Kids who are Outsiders/Bystanders
Don't support the bullying but don't help the student being bullied. Might provide an audience which can encourage the behavior. Want to help the student being bullied but don't know how
Kids who are Bullied and Bully Others
Increased risk for negative outcomes, including depression or suicidal ideation
All kids should be involved in bully prevention efforts
