Establishment of Nazi Dictatorship & Domestic Policies 1933-1939
Schacht's New Plan 1933-1936
Schacht WAS AN ECONOMIST. He was made Economic Minister in 1933 and introduced the New Plan in 1943
There would be big cuts in welfare spending (benefits)
He made import exchange agreements with other areas of the world. To exchange German Industrial goods for much needed raw materials.
He aimed to reduce Germanys reliance imports (Goods bought outside Germany)
Government spending would be focused on key areas
Rearmament (industry making weapons) was to be GRADUALLY increased
Schacht's plan performed well, However Hitler wanted to REARM Germany faster to prepare for war. Scacht did NOT agree so he resigned.
Goreing's Four Year Plan
Goering was a MAJOR NAZI, He DID NOT have any economic background. Hitler put him in charge of economics in 1936 to help make Germany ready for war.
Germany to be made ready for war
SPENDING was massivly increased on military rearmament
New factories were built but priority was given to those producing military goods
Industry was strictly controlled and TARGETS were set which had to be met
AGRICULTURE was controlled and the targets set were to achieve better food production
AUTARKY was introduced. This aimed to make Germany SELF-SUFFICIENT in materials. Industries were encouraged to develop alternatives.
Goring had a few Success but A Lot of Limitations. He still kept the German Economy growing and continued to reduce unemployment to 0.5 million
Conscription
Schacht was mostly successful however had some limitations; SUCCESSES - Unemployment was reduced, The Economy began to grow, Farmers benefited from the great demand for food, Factory workers benefited from the increase in orders, Production increased by over 50%
FAILURES? - Germany was still buying more than it was making, There were major restrictions on workers (Jews and Women were discouraged from working), The RAD was compulsory and poorly paid.
Hitlers Economic Aims
Reducing Unemployment
Controlling the Economy
Getting Germany ready for war
HOWEVER, Germany was still importing over 1/3 of its raw materials by 1939, Even with AUTARKY some suggest that Germany went to war to be able to become self-sufficient - they had to conquer territory to succeed.
