What is Earth made of?
The Crust
The Mantle
The Earth’s mantle are made up of hot rock, so they melted. This molten rock seeps through cracks in the crust and pours out of volcanoes. This is called lava. When the lava cools down, it turns into stone.
The Core
The core is subdivided into the outer and inner cores. The inner core is solid and is about 2,250km while the outer core is in a liquid state. In fact the temperature in inner core is greater than 3,700`C.Inner core is made up entirely of iron. The outer core is made up of nickel -iron alloy.
The Earth’s surface is covered by its thinnest layer, the crust. Land is made of continental crust, which is 8km to 70km thick and made mostly from a rock called granite. The layer beneath the ocean bed is made of oceanic crust, which is about 8km thick and made mainly from a rock called basalt.THe Crust is broken into pieces called plates. The continental Drift Theory states that these plates are constantly moving. The Oceanic plates are made up of rocks that are not too old.The continental plates are made up of older rocks.
