Multiculturalism and National Identity in Malaysia
The Implications for Classroom Practice
The multicultural reality of Malaysia must be used as a resource through which students can learn to appreciate each other's similarities and differences. Malaysianness, or the desire to be Malaysian, should be included in classroom discussions through literature, as well as the more broad goal of instilling global morals.
Second, among the texts chosen for classroom usage, there must be those that honour students' uniqueness while also enhancing their distinctive similarities and identity as Malaysians.
More Malaysian writers are needed to write our own children's literature, and critique of children's literature must be established.
When dealing with Malaysian children's literature, teachers must educate pupils in critically analysing works so that the noble objective of a harmonious multicultural existence can be realised.
National Identity In Malaysia
Malaysia's Rukun Negara may be considered as essential principles which work to unite the different ethnic groups in Malaysia.
Promotion of joined festivals such as Deepa-Raya and Kongsi-Raya
The 1957 Malayan Constitution and the 1963 Consitution acknowledges the rights of immigrant groups by granting them citizenship.
The Malaysian government has allowed other minority languages' vernacular education
Recognizing the special rights of the Malays and other indigenious groups as the natives of the land.
After 1969, neither group nor individual equality applies in all government sectors after racial quotas which privileged by Malays imposed on all places including universities, government sectors and preferential bank.
Multiculturalism
Charles Taylor (1992) claims that we should not assume that all cultures are equal but that we should recognize that they can provide something of value.
For United States, the concept of 'melting pot' is seen as an assimilation device for immigrants and multiculturism is not made into any policies but is a more open application (Forst, 2006).
Generally, multiculturism is considered an ideology that gives equal status to each cultural group exists in a particular country.
For example, this metaphor is seen as an assimilation process for European immigrants, not US-born black people.
In Southeast Asian countries, multiculturalism are recognised through multicultural festivals, cuisine.
Malaysia's cultural festivals and commemoration ceremonies are more ‘symbolic’ of cultural harmony.
