A Summary of Graphical Presentation of Data
Depends on the nature of data:
Categorical (qualitative)
Variables
Pie chart
Pareto diagram
Bar chart
Frequency distribution
Numerical (quantitative)
Variables
Frequency distribution
Histogram and ogive
Line chart
Stem-and-leaf display
Scatter plot- involve two variables
Bar and Pie Charts
Height of bar or size of pie slice shows the frequency or percentage for each category.
Command to get it using SPSS:
Bar charts and Pie charts are often used for qualitative (category) data
graph legacy dialogs choose the kind of graphic you want, such as pie. A pie chart dialog box is open. Click summarise for groups of cases and define bring a variable into the box define slice by, such as education OK.
If you want to compare educational attainment by gender, then bring gender into one of the boxes label as panel by. Alternatively, you can get clustered bar chart.
Pareto Diagram
A cumulative polygon is often shown in the same graph to show the cumulative proportions for the different causes.
Used to separate the “vital few” from the “trivial many”
A bar chart, where categories (shown by bars) are shown in descending order of frequency
Popular in quality control application. It is then easy to see which defects should be targeted to most effectively lower the defective rate.
Used to portray categorical data - nominal
Graphs for Time-Series Data
Time is measured on the horizontal axis
The variable of interest is measured on the vertical axis
A line chart (time-series plot) is used to show the values of a variable over time
