Oral Squamous Papilloma, Verruca Vulgaris, Condyloma Acuminatum,…
Oral Squamous Papilloma
Etiolgoy
Human papillomavirus (HPV) 2, 6, 11, and 57
-
Treatment
Conservative surgery, cryotherapy, or electrodessication
-
-
Oral characteristics
-
Painless, exophytic, well-circumscribed, pedunculated or sessile masses
-
-
-
Verruca Vulgaris
-
Oral Characteristics
-
Located in heavy keratinized areas such as lips, hard palate, and gingiva
-
-
Treatment
The virus usually goes away spontaneously, but surgical removal is needed in most cases. Good immune system must be present
Liquid nitrogren, cryotherapy, scapel or carbon dioxide laser
-
Epidemiology
Most commonly on the hands and feet
of infants, after a latency of 3 to 6 months
Condyloma Acuminatum
-
Epidemiology
Decrease risk for some cancers—maintain a healthy weight, healthy diet high in fiber and antioxidants, no tobacco, limit alcohol use, exercise, etc
-
-
Oral characteristics
EO: Lesions can occur on any mucosal surface; multiple, flat, pinkish, exophytic growths with sessile base and round cauliflower like surface
IO: Occur in frequently traumatized sites; papular growth that coalesce, becoming nodular, pink, exophytic growths with rough surface
-
-
-
-
Keratoacanthoma
-
-
-
Oral Characteristics
EO: Dome shaped nodular with a smooth shiny surface with center cratered containing a core of keratin; sun exposed skin
-
-
-
Verrucous Carcinoma
-
-
Oral Characteristics
IO: Early lesions appear as white patches, whereas more fully developed lesions display a cauliflower-like papillary appearance.
The most common site is the oral pharynx and the tonsil region. Although it invades adjacent structure; it does not metastasize.
Oral complaints include halitosis, stinging, and burning
Treatment
A biopsy must be performed to provide a definitive diagnosis with subsequent surgical removal. Cryotherapy (freezing) has a high rate of success when the lesion is well-circumscribed. Metastasis is rare unless squamous cell is identified within the lesion. Smoking cessation and/or spit tobacco education is crucial for the patient

-
-
Papillary Hyperplasia
-
-
-
-
Treatment
New dentures should not be fabricated over papillary hyperplasia, as the impression for new denture will incorporate papillary configuration and increase likelihood of another ill-fitting denture
Oral Characteristics
IO: Lesions on palatal mucosa are pink to bright red, crusted, papules that are firm
