Fluoxetine - Coggle Diagram
Fluoxetine
Mechanism of action of fluoxetine?
Serotonin and norepinephrine, both play role in depression.
Low concentrations of serotonin appear of patients with depression.
Lower levels of serotonin uptake sites also present on the platelets of patients with depression.
Fluoxetine is used to modulate levels of serotonin.
Fluoxetine is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI)
It exerts it's therapeutic effect by inhibiting the presynaptic reuptake of the serotonin
This will allow serotonin to remain active in the synapse longer.
As a result, levels of 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) increased.
Since 5-HTP increases the synthesis of serotonin, that high levels of serotonin in the brain are linked to elevated mood and feeling happy.
This will help the depression patient.
The classes of antidepressant agents.
Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs)
Serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs)
Monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs)
Tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs)
Atypical agents
Contrast the mechanisms of action of the antidepressant agents.
Serotonin norepinephrine re-uptake inhibitor (SNRIs)
SNRI inhibits both Serotonin Transporter (SERT) and Norepinephrine Transporter (NET)
Reuptake of both Serotonin and Norepinephrine inhibited
Serotonin and Norepinephrine level increase.
Tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs)
Reuptake of serotonin and Norepinephrine inhibited.
But, it is non selective therefore will also inhibit other receptors.
TCA blocks both Serotonin Transporter (SERT) and Norepinephrine Transporter (NET)
Results in undesirable side effect.
Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs)
Inhibits Serotonin Transporter (SERT) that transport serotonin back to presynaptic cleft.
The reuptake of serotonin is inhibited
Monoamine oxidase inhibitor antidepressants (MAOIs)
MAOI inhibits the activity of MAO subtype A
Therefore, increase the availability of serotonin and norepinephrine
MAO Subtype A: metabolizes/breakdown serotonin and norepinephrine
