epicentre was 25km from Port-au-Prince
86% of Port-au-Prince's population lives in slum conditions
the last major earthquake in this area was 150 years previously
1 in 15 people died
Economic Effects
an estimated 600,000 people fled to the countryside, putting great strain on rural areas
the Haitian tourist industry declined, as tourists stopped visiting
losses/damage estimated at $7.8 billion nationally
Social / Political Effects
100,000 homes were destroyed
roads were blocked with debris and road surfaces were broken. This limited aid reaching people
there were also frequent power cuts
the destruction of governmental buildings hindered the government's efforts to control Haiti and the police force collapsed
looting became a big issue
by November there were cholera outbreaks
over 2 million were people left without food and water
300,000 people were injured and 220,000 people died
an estimated 4000 survivors became amputees
the main port was badly damaged and partly collapsed into the sea
within the first 9 hours there were 32 aftershocks of magnitude 4.2+
1.3 million people were made homeless
8 hospitals in Port-au-Prince were badly damaged
the main prison in Port-au-Prince was damaged and 4000 inmates escaped
Mitigation
to begin, Ralph Senecal was the only person giving first aid. He owns the only ambulance service in Port-au-Prince
US soldiers "helped" but brought lots of weapons
after taking control of the airport they sent planes bringing aid away
after 3 months a camp was built but the shelters weren't very strong and there was no permanent water source
NGOs began the restoration effort
