Drawing Inferences
Definition
- An inference is an idea or conclusion that's drawn from evidence and reasoning or observation.
- Making an inference can be thought of as "reading between the lines of what you read."

Why making inferences?
- In a story, everything you read in the text can be used as the basis for making an inference.
- When you read, you need to make inferences about things happening in the story.
- Making inferences support reading comprehension.
- When readers infer, they're personally engaged with the text, are more aware of the author's purpose, and are processing to deeper meaning.
