Inspector calls characters
The main antagonist of the play.
Constantly mistreated by the birling family.
She is lower class women without a husband so traditionaly has no respect from anyone.
She is portrayed as sweet and kind but hurt a lot.
She eventually just looses trust in everyone.
Mr Birling is the head of the Birling family. He tries to be in control and be assertive.
He is actualy upper working class. This is shown when he says things that propper upper class people do. He has made his wealth through work not inherited it like upper class people.
He tries to impress people like Gerald because he is upper class and Birling wants to partner with his dads business. He does this by mentioning the fact that he may be getting a knoghthood and that Gerald should mention it to his mother.
Mrs Birling is a true upper class citizen as she has inherited her wealth.
She comes accross as quite moody and assertive. She is second most importnt in the family although she always trie to be on top.
She often subtly tells Mr Birling off for acting out of place umungst upper class people.
Shiela is by far the character who changes the most throughout the play.
She is seen as un-educted in the realism of the world and is often shocked by new the inspector brings.
You could say she is actually very similar to the inspector. She wants to see change and by the end of the play she starts to have sociualist views.
The inspector is the man who delivers all the news of the Birlings involvment with Evas death. It may be all fake but he still sends them a messeage that is they do not change that they would face the consequences.
He has socialist views and blocks out all attempts to intimidate him by people like Mr Birling.
Gerald is engaged to Shiela at the start of the play but as the play goes on, and mor eof his story is revealed, Shiela decides not to marry him yet.
Gerald is a young upper class man who is well respected in his fathers business.
