The Four Skills
Listening
what is it? An actice, purposeful process of making sense of what we hear
Listening is receptive, it requires a person to receive and understand incoming information.
-
Reading
What is it? A fluent process of readers combining information from a text and their own background knowledge to build meaning.
The text, the reader, fluency, and strategies combined define the act of reading.
Strategic reading: Defined as the ability of the reader to use a wide variety of reading strategies to accomplish a purpose for reading.
Fluent Reading: Defined as the ability to read at an appropriate rate with adequate comprehension. Meaning does not rest in the reader nor does it rest in the text.
-
Speaking
What is it? Many people feel that speaking in a new language is harder than reading, writing, or listening for two reasons: Speaking happens in real time and when you speak, you cannot edit nor revise what wish to say. Language generated by the learner is referred to as productive while language directed at the learner is called receptive The channel refers to the medium of the message aural/oral or written. Speaking consists of producing systematic verbal utterances to convey meaning.
-
Writing
What is it? Both a physical and mental act. The physical act of committing words or ideas to some medium. The mental work of inventing ideas and expressing them.
Its purpose is to express and impress. writers typically serve themselves and their own desires to express an idea/feeling. It is both a process and a product. The writer imagines, organizes, edits, etc. The audience sees the product.
