When using the collaborative-dependent model, the consultee works together with the consultant. Each party has a unique set of experience and expertise that they are able to contribute to solving a problem. Using this model, the consultant and consultee develop a partnership for the purpose of developing a plan.

Collaboration
Collaboration is an important part of making sure that students with special needs are appropriately included in the general education classroom. It is also important for teachers and collaborators to be aware of how to best approach using collaboration for the benefit of students with special needs. Because general education teachers tend to lack the qualifications and necessary to provide the best education possible for students who have special needs, bringing in an expert can help to create an appropriate learning environment.
Consultation is a process in which a human services professional assists a consultee with a work-related (or caretaking-related) problem with a client system, with the goal of helping both the consultee and the client system in some specific way.

The special education teacher acts as a consultant for the general education teacher for the following areas
: IEP (Individualized Education Program) accommodations, applying skills in general education classes, keeping track of goals, etc.
